Mechanical Engraving vs Black Laser Marking on Pewter & Stainless Steel Mugs
If you’re looking for personalised pewter mugs, stainless steel mug engraving, or tankard engraving on the Gold Coast or in Brisbane, one of the most common questions we get is:
“Will the design be engraved into the metal, or will it be a black marking?”
The answer depends on the marking method used.

Mechanical Engraving
Mechanical engraving uses a diamond or rotary engraving tool to physically cut into the surface of the pewter or stainless steel.
- The design is genuinely engraved into the metal
- You can feel the engraving with your fingertip
- Produces a natural silver finish with no added colour
- Ideal for names, logos, dates and presentation gifts where a traditional engraved appearance is desired
Black Laser Marking
Some laser systems create a permanent black mark by altering the surface of the metal rather than cutting into it.
- No material is removed
- The surface remains smooth to the touch
- Produces a crisp, high-contrast black finish
- Excellent for detailed artwork, logos and modern designs
Which Finish Should You Choose?
Neither method is better. They simply produce different results.
If you’re expecting a classic engraved finish that you can actually feel, mechanical engraving is the right choice.
If you’re after a sharp black design with maximum contrast, laser marking may be the better option.
