Can Metal Be Engraved?

Yes, many metals can be engraved, marked or laser processed, but the result depends heavily on the exact material, alloy, coating and surface finish. Stainless steel, aluminium, brass and anodised aluminium are among the most common metal surfaces we work with, while plated metals, precious metals and specialty engineering metals may need extra assessment before quoting.

Some metals produce a dark laser mark, some engrave with a lighter frosted mark, and others expose a different layer beneath the surface. Plated and coated metals need particular care because the engraving can remove or disturb the top finish and reveal the base material underneath.

If the material is unknown, unusual, valuable or customer-supplied, we will confirm suitability before proceeding. For sentimental, expensive or irreplaceable items, testing or careful inspection may be recommended first.

How Different Metals Engrave

Not every metal responds the same way. A clean result on brushed stainless steel may look completely different to the same artwork on anodised aluminium, bare brass, chrome plating or gold. This is why we assess the material, finish and intended use before confirming the best engraving approach.

Engraving Process and Finish

Metal engraving and marking can involve different results depending on the surface. Some metals are engraved by removing or changing the surface, while others are laser marked to create contrast without deep cutting.

For coated, anodised, plated, lacquered or patinated metals, the mark may expose a different layer beneath the top surface. This can produce a clean result, but it also means the final look depends on the coating, plating thickness and base material.

Pricing depends on the type of metal, item size, artwork complexity, engraving area, quantity and whether the item is supplied by you or sourced by us. Coated, plated, precious or specialty metals may take longer to assess and quote than standard materials.

For bulk runs such as asset tags, compliance plates, serial plates and production parts, per-unit pricing generally improves with volume. Spreadsheets can be used for variable data such as serial numbers, QR codes and asset IDs.
