Custom Timber and Wood Engraving

We provide precision engraving on timber for plaques, signage, honour boards, memorials and presentation pieces, as well as gifts and homewares. Wood engraving is widely used for personalised gifts, business signage, memorial plaques and decorative items, producing a permanent mark that becomes part of the timber itself.

Timber engraving is suitable for everything from a single personalised keepsake through to commercial signage, memorial products and large recognition displays. The process works across solid timber, engineered boards and timber veneers, which is why it suits such a wide range of items, from engraved wooden signs and timber plaques through to honour boards, charcuterie boards and personalised gifts.

We also engrave customer-supplied timber items, including reclaimed timber and live edge slabs. If you already have the piece, bring it to us or send it in and we will confirm it is suitable before quoting.

  • One-off pieces and bulk commercial orders
  • Permanent burned-in engraved finish
  • Layout approval before engraving
  • Plaques, signage, honour boards and memorials

Can Wood Be Engraved?

Yes, and timber is one of the most rewarding materials to engrave. The process burns a permanent mark into the surface, producing a result that ranges from a light golden tone through to a deep, dark contrast depending on the timber species and the settings used.

The mark will not wash off, peel or fade with normal handling. Because the engraving follows the natural grain of the timber, no two pieces look quite the same, which is part of the appeal for timber plaques, signage and presentation pieces alike.

Fine detail engraves well on timber, including text, logos, crests and detailed artwork. Different timber species engrave differently. Grain pattern, density and natural colour variation all affect the finished appearance, so the same design can look noticeably different on pine compared to walnut. We can advise on the best timber for your project if you are unsure.

Most raw and finished timber is suitable. Previously painted, stained or heavily coated timber may produce different results and is assessed individually.

Timber Species and Wood Materials We Commonly Engrave

Different timber species and engineered wood products engrave differently. Grain pattern, density, colour, resin, glue, coating and surface finish all affect how dark, sharp or subtle the final engraving appears.

Some woods produce a clean dark mark, while others engrave with a softer, lighter contrast. Engineered products such as plywood, MDF and veneer panels can also engrave well, but the finish depends on the surface layer and adhesive used in the board.

Material Group Wood Types and Materials Engraving Notes
Light and Soft Timbers Balsa wood, basswood, cedar, Douglas Fir, Hoop Pine, Huon Pine, Paulownia, pine and softwood Often engrave with a lighter, warmer mark. These timbers can be useful for signs, craft items, models, plaques and decorative work, but very soft timber may need careful handling.
Hardwoods and Feature Timbers Beech, birch, Blackbutt, Blackwood, cherry timber, Jarrah, maple, Merbau, oak, Spotted Gum, Tasmanian Myrtle, Tasmanian Oak, teak and walnut Hardwoods often produce a sharper and more premium result, although the final contrast depends on density, grain and natural timber colour.
Australian Timbers Blackbutt, Blackwood, Hoop Pine, Huon Pine, Jarrah, Spotted Gum, Tasmanian Myrtle and Tasmanian Oak Popular for plaques, signage, memorials, honour boards and presentation pieces where the timber itself is part of the finished look.
Engineered Wood Products Plywood, birch plywood, bamboo composite plywood, marine grade plywood, Masonite, MDF, raw MDF, painted MDF and medium density fibreboard Engineered boards can engrave very well, especially for signage, displays, craft projects and bulk production. The surface layer and coating affect the result.
Veneers and Finished Surfaces Timber veneer, wood veneer, lacquered timber and lacquered wood Veneers and lacquered surfaces need assessment because engraving may remove or mark the top finish rather than behaving like solid timber.
General Wood Materials Timber and wood If you are unsure what species or board type you have, send us a photo. We can usually advise whether it is likely to engrave well.

If you have a specific timber species, veneer, plywood, MDF board or finished wooden item in mind, contact us with a photo and we will advise based on the material, surface finish and intended design.

Engraving Process and Finish

We use precision laser engraving to mark timber, burning a permanent design into the surface. The depth and contrast of the mark can be adjusted to suit the timber species and the desired finished appearance, from a light, subtle tone through to a deep, dark contrast.

The result becomes part of the timber surface itself. It will not wash off, peel or wear away with normal handling and cleaning.

Layout assistance is available for projects without finished artwork, and most projects include a design proof for your review before production begins.

Light Engraving

A subtle, golden-toned mark that preserves more of the timber's natural colour. Often preferred for fine detail and lighter timber species.

Deep Engraving

A darker, higher-contrast mark suited to bold text, logos and designs intended to stand out clearly against the timber surface.

Raw and Finished Timber

We engrave both raw, untreated timber and finished pieces with an existing coating or finish, with the approach adjusted depending on the surface.

FAQ's about Timber and Wood Engraving

A wide range. Plaques, signage, honour boards, memorial products, furniture, kitchenware and personalised gifts are all common requests. If your item is made from timber and you are unsure whether it can be engraved, send us a photo and we will advise.

Yes. Logos engrave cleanly onto timber and are one of our most common commercial requests, used on signage, plaques, awards and corporate gifts. Vector artwork in AI, EPS, PDF or SVG format gives the best result, though we can advise on other formats if that is not what you have.

We specialise in precision laser engraving, which produces crisp detail for text, logos and artwork. If your project specifically requires CNC routing or deep carving, contact us and we will advise on the most suitable approach.

Yes. A handwritten message or signature can be engraved onto timber, provided a clear image or scan is supplied. This is a popular choice for memorial plaques, keepsakes and sentimental gifts.

Yes. Plywood engraves well and is a common choice for signage, display panels and maker-space projects. The visible grain and layered edge of plywood can add a distinctive look to the finished engraving.

Yes. Customer-supplied timber items are welcome, subject to suitability, including reclaimed timber and live edge slabs. Bring the item to our Gold Coast workshop or send it to us from anywhere in Australia, and we will confirm it is suitable and provide a quote before starting.

Yes. Grain pattern, density and natural colour variation all affect the finished result. Lighter timbers such as pine produce a softer contrast, while denser timbers such as walnut or jarrah typically produce a darker, more defined mark.

Yes. Bamboo engraves well and is a popular choice for kitchenware, coasters and homewares. Its density and grain differ from traditional timber, so the finished contrast can look slightly different.

For most projects, send the item or items to be engraved, what you need engraved, the quantity, and any artwork or design references. A sketch or example image helps for more detailed layouts.

In many cases yes, but the result depends on the type and thickness of the coating. Heavily painted or laminated surfaces may need to be assessed individually, as the engraving may reveal the raw timber beneath the coating rather than darkening the coating itself.

In most cases yes. Send us a photo of the existing board or plaque and we will advise on how closely we can match the font, layout, timber and finish for consistency.

The engraved mark is permanent under normal use. It will not wash off, peel or fade with regular handling and cleaning, though like all timber products, ongoing care such as oiling boards may be needed to maintain the timber itself over time.

Both. We can source timber, boards and signage blanks for your project, or engrave items you already have. If you have your own timber item, contact us to confirm it is suitable before sending it in.

Yes. We regularly produce engraved timber items for customers across Australia. Finished items are packed securely for transit and we handle the full process remotely for most project types.

Customer-Supplied Timber Items

We engrave customer-supplied timber items including plaques, furniture, signage, honour boards, chopping boards, live edge slabs and personal keepsakes, including sentimental, heirloom and reclaimed timber pieces. If you already have the item and need it personalised or updated with new engraving, bring it to our Gold Coast workshop or send it to us from anywhere in Australia.

Previously finished, painted or coated timber may produce different results to raw timber, as the engraving can reveal the surface beneath the coating rather than marking the coating itself. We will assess your item, confirm it is suitable, advise on the best approach, and provide a quote before starting. There is no commitment until you approve.
